When we talk about food at Fitter Body Ladies, protein usually gets all the attention, but there’s another quiet hero that deserves a place on your plate: fibre. Adding more fibre-rich foods to your day is one of the simplest ways to feel fuller for longer, keep your digestion happy and make your meals more satisfying, without any faddy rules or cutting out the foods you love.
Why Fibre Is Such a Good Friend
Fibre is the part of plant foods your body can’t fully break down, and that’s exactly what makes it so useful. It adds bulk to meals, slows things down a little so you feel satisfied, and helps keep you regular. Plenty of women also find that meals with a good dose of fibre help them avoid that mid-afternoon slump and the biscuit-tin raid that often comes with it.
The trouble is, most of us don’t eat as much of it as we could. Busy days, grab-and-go lunches and lots of beige, processed food can mean fibre gets pushed out without us even noticing.
Easy Fibre-Rich Foods to Add This Week
You don’t need a cupboard full of special ingredients. Here are some everyday options that are easy to find in any supermarket:
- Oats – porridge or overnight oats make a warming, filling breakfast on these darker autumn mornings.
- Beans, lentils and chickpeas – throw a tin into soups, stews, curries or chilli for extra bulk.
- Vegetables – broccoli, carrots, peas, sprouts, leafy greens… the more colour, the better.
- Fruit – apples, pears and berries are brilliant, and keeping the skin on where you can gives you a bit more.
- Wholegrains – wholemeal bread, brown rice and wholewheat pasta instead of the white versions.
- Nuts and seeds – a small handful on yoghurt or salads, or a spoonful of chia or ground flaxseed in your porridge.
- Potatoes with their skins on – jacket potatoes are a cosy, fibre-friendly comfort food.
Simple Swaps That Add Up
Small changes make the biggest difference because they’re the ones you’ll actually stick to. Try swapping your white toast for wholemeal, adding a handful of frozen veg to your pasta sauce, or bulking out mince with lentils. Keep a bowl of fruit on the side where you’ll see it, and stock up on tinned beans so you always have something to hand on a hectic evening.
If you’re used to eating very little fibre, go steady and increase it bit by bit over a couple of weeks. Jumping straight in can leave you feeling a bit bloated, so give your tummy time to adjust.
Don’t Forget Your Water
Fibre works best with plenty of fluid, so as you add more fibre-rich foods, keep a water bottle with you through the day. Herbal teas count too, and a warm mug can be a lovely little ritual when the weather turns chilly.
Building Balanced Plates
At FBL we love a balanced plate: some protein, plenty of veg, a portion of fibre-rich carbs and a little healthy fat. That mix is what helps you feel full, energised and in control, rather than constantly thinking about your next snack. It’s the Food part of our 3F System – Focus, Fitness and Food – working hand in hand with everything else you’re doing.
